The humble life of CD250
CD250 has a life of luxury compared to five years ago. She rarely has to work and sees her owners every day when they come to the mailbox. This is a far cry from her previous life in the factory when she was still called 28-224. Getting treated like a number on an assembly line CD250 got branded like cattle with those evil numbers "28-224" that she still wears today as an unfortunate reminder of those terrible times. CD250 recalls "They would keep us in small dark closets running 24/7 only visiting us if somebody broke down. Imagine the irony, not knowing what light looks like when it is your very purpose in life to produce it." CD250 is a capitalist because it was capitalism that was responsible for her freedom. A newer more technologically advanced factory opened and put her prison factory out of business.
I wondered why CD250 didn't support green energy efficient factories so that other generators did not have to go through the same experiences.

Hunter Killer gaurding an underground hideoute
Hunter Killer Prototype Generator
You gotta watch out for these guy's lurking in bushes and under shady tree's these small generators are not as cute at they look. In fact they are quite the opposite! from the 40's to the 60's an underground (literally) band of infrastructure generators who were over worked by the growing energy demands of the cities and suburban sprawl decided that they have had enough and started causing sweeping black outs in protest. These black out continue to this day. But seeing that their protest was falling on deaf ears they developed these small generators and have infiltrated them into mainstream society. With the fast network of electricity they are able to communicate with their cute cutthroat impostors and deliver them instructions.
You never know when a hunter killer will strike, but the chances are you will loose your electricity one night and in the darkness you and your family will be carry off by these hunter killers and sucked under ground never to be seen again.

The Traveling Trio!
While I was in Mashpee, MA. I felt like I was being followed by this one generator. It had this scary eye/ meter on it so it looked like it was always looking at me.
Much to my relief I realized I was not being followed, but I just kept running into "THE TRAVELING TRIO." Not very sociable, these three love to make appearances all over town. I Spotted them trekking to the post office, waiting to cross the street and checking out retail space, They are fast travelers, they made it to the beach before I did that day!
I wonder if they'll ever be satisfied with their location...
Saturday
Her new best friend is Kearney Jr.
Kearney Jr. and AX818 live next door to each other. I introduced Lois to both of them and she really hit it off with Kearney!
"Why do they keep me back here?" Kearney said with a monotonous electrical buzzing.
Lois responded "I don't know but you deserve better!" They spent the rest of the afternoon emphasizing with each other about how unfair the world is.
Kearney wishes she was green colored like AX818 because she think that would make her more acceptable to the landscapers. Maybe they'll move here to a place with a better view if she fit it better with the shrubbery.
Power Generators on Vacation!-AX818_102334/067
This AX818 generator was hiding behind a fence next to the entrance road of the Stratford Ponds community. The fence Immediately caught my eye when I was going by because there were no houses nearby so what else would the fence be there for besides a generator depot. AX818 was one of 4 generators tucked away behind this fence like dirty little secrets! Are these people ashamed that they use energy with a generator that is at least 1 ton heavy?
NOTE: AX818 clearly states that there should be no shrubery within 4 feet of him! Is that tree 4 feet away? ...I think not.

Direction of this Project
Today I came to a bit of a realization of my intention with documentation power generators and ac units. First it is my fascination with the structures themselves and their very simple and practical design but also these structures give an insight into the energy culture of America at large. Many of these generators are not actually needed day to day, but are a back up generators if the main power fails. Has electricity been so ingrained into our society that one cannot go a second without it?
These structures are little monuments to the energy industry's success and the proliferation of electrical development. My project is a criticism of America's energy consuming culture and I attempt to transform these structures into something other than what they are. One reason this is so urgent for me is that I am reclaiming the landscape that surrounds me through my photographs and making these structures my own instead of the culture of consumption permeating every aspect of my life. Ideally everyone would live off the grid so that we are not getting controlled by the people who control the grid. Maybe we must go "Green." But we definitely have to go Black by dropping out of the energy race. As an alternative we should start to build wind generators Like This Wind Generator Here!

Loyal Gaurd Power Generator
This beauty here lives on the Bard College campus. I am sure that it is not an AC unit, but I can't tell if it is a standby unit or a dedicated generator. I could hear a faint buzzing noise as I walked by so I took a photo so I could remember this one. This portrait then got me started on a rampage around the campus capturing a great diversity which I will be posting as time goes on. What I like about this one is the way it the lines line up with the structure it is serving. its like a faithful dog just one that doesn't pee on your upholstery.
My Fastination with Power Generators and Like Structures
I couldn't tell you when my interest in infrastructure type things started to influence me. As far back as I can remember i always liked to look at telephone polls, electric wires, pipes, air conditioners, and anything that was part of the constructed landscape. Most recently starting about a year ago I became obsessed with power generators and AC units that are sprinkled everywhere from your local supermarket to the trailer park in Kentucky. What fascinated me and still fascinates me about these structures are how they are integrated so seamlessly into our landscape so that we rarely know they are there. Furthermore the amazing diversity in these structures is fantastic! There are so many shapes sizes and colors all chosen to fit into the landscaped parking lot like a puzzle piece. There are many more reasons I like these modern sculptures but I won't bore you. I'll save the intrigues of my interest for later posts. This blog will be devoted to:
- Discovering new generators lurking in our landscape
- Exhibiting generator portraits
- Presenting generator bios
- Providing more information on where you can adopt a generator yourself.
